Skin treatments have gained more and more popularity over the years, and there are many treatments to choose from. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive technique that uses a controlled flow of crystals to gently buff away the top layer of skin, resulting in a smoother skin tone and texture. Our Ottawa skin clinic offers microdermabrasion treatments that can be tailored to your specific skin type and needs.
If you’re looking for a skin treatment that can help improve the look of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, or acne scars, microdermabrasion may be right for you. Keep reading to know more about the procedure.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a medical treatment that will gently remove the top layer of skin.
Using a specially designed instrument, the top layer is scraped. Another method is to spray the skin with a composition that includes an aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate. It has proven safe and suitable for most skin types and colours.
While this is considered non-invasive, it should only be performed under sterile conditions and by a qualified specialist at an Ottawa skincare clinic.
Is Microdermabrasion and dermaplaning the same?
This is a different procedure from dermaplaning. Dermaplaning uses a scalpel, but microdermabrasion uses different instruments. There are three main forms of the process:
Diamond-tip handpiece
This custom tool removes the dead cells and suctions them from the skin’s surface. The depth is controlled by the amount of pressure applied and the length of time the tool is held in one place. It is generally used in the facial area, and its precision allows it to be used around the eyes.
Crystal
This is a spray of fine crystals on the skin and comes equipped with its own suction, much like the diamond-tip handpiece.
Hydra dermabrasion
Using water and oxygen to remove the skin is a newer version of the crystal treatment.
Is Microdermabrasion painful?
You should expect to feel some discomfort, but it should not be painful. Discuss this with your specialist, who can adjust the suction accordingly. If you have sensitive skin, be sure to talk about it at the initial appointment and before the scheduled procedure.
What are the results like?
The result of microdermabrasion includes:
- Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reducing the appearance of age spots and pigmentation
- Acne and blackhead removal
- Reducing the appearance of stretch marks
- Creating a more even skin texture and tone
- Sun damage
Is there any side effect or contraindications?
With a careful pre-assessment by a qualified technician, there are few side effects. They commonly are redness and tenderness, which seem to dissipate within the first two hours. Those with sensitive skin or severe acne will need to take a bit more caution.
It is not recommended for eczema, rosacea, psoriasis or herpes. It cannot be performed if you have a current sunburn or open sores.
How is the post-care?
Post-procedure care is keeping the skin hydrated with gentle moisturizers and sunscreen. Topical acne creams are not recommended for the first 24 hours.
