Your Skin at Every Age

Your skin much like your body changes as it gets older. Read on to find out how to care for it, regardless of your age!

In your 20′s: Attention Attention! This is your skin’s prime and the way you care for it now will determine how it will look years from now. Your skin is supple and firm with great collagen support. It has not yet started to show signs of sun damage and your most common concern is occasional flare ups.

Dermis suggests: Use gentle products that do not strip your skin of its natural lipid barriers. Start on a good eye cream with SPF. Wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF 20. Use targeted treatment products for specific concerns like spot treating acne or fighting dehydration.

In your 30′s: Your metabolism is not what it used to be and your cellular turnover is starting to slow down making the skin look dull. Fine lines are starting to appear near the eyes and mouth. You may notice hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Some women may get blotchy redness and develop sensitivity.

Dermis suggests: Exfoliate! You will notice immediate improvement with a good exfoliation. Use a targeted night time treatment with Lactic Acid which increases cellular turnover and hydration. Products with stable Vitamin C, Kojic Acid, Reservatrol all help the fight sun damage and help to even out skin tone.

In your 40′s: You will notice the skin becoming finer and thinner. It also looks dry as the sebaceous secretions have slowed and your skin will not reflect light as easily to hide signs of ageing. The skin appears less firm especially around the jawline and neck area. You are losing elasticity and collagen – the building blocks of firm skin.

Dermis suggests: Use a cleanser with exfoliating properties. It will keep your skin prepped and smooth. Look for moisturizers with antioxidants and peptides. Peptides have the ability to strengthen collagen and elastin. Use a night time treatment with Retinol – the gold standard in fine line and wrinkle reduction. Do not forget your SPF as Retinol makes your skin photo sensitive. Your skin care therapist can help change things up so that your skin does not plateau!

In your 50′s and beyond: Giving up on your skin? It is never too late to prevent loss of elasticity and tone. Your are likely to develop fine facial veins, deeper lines and skin maybe visibly dry. Hyperpigmentation is much more apparent. Menopause brings a host of issues like flushed appearance, large pores, uneven texture and even acne!

Dermis suggests: Regular professional treatments like peels, collagen treatments and face tightening treatments like Laser Genesis not only improve texture and treat redness they also stimulate your skin to build its own collagen. Combination of some of these therapies have dramatic results. Combining with products that contain phytoestogens reduce all signs of menopause on the skin.

Bask in the Limelight…treatment

Dermis has a brand new superstar: The Limelight Treatment!

Limelight Patient Before & After

What is it?
Limelight is a non-invasive face treatment designed address pigmentation in the skin as well as redness. The Limelight treatment course  will give you a more improved skin tone and smooth surface imperfections including those caused by photo damage and aging. This treatment can be used on any area of the face with skin redness, telangiectasia or brown spots. Limelight can be customized to selectively treat the brown and red pigmented areas only without over-heating the rest of your skin.

How does it work?
A gel is applied to the skin prior to treatment to cool it before the procedure. Your therapist will then activate the hand piece and begin the procedure. A pulse of light is delivered to heat only the red or brown pigment and leave the rest of the skin alone. This may cause a mild pinching sensation on the skin, but the treatment as a whole is not designed to be painful. Generally patients need between 3-4 treatments with Limelight.

How can I find out more?
Visit the Dermis Website for more information. You can also call or stop by Dermis to speak one on one with a therapist to determine if you are a candidate for Limelight.
Take advantage of our promotion! We are offering 25% off a package of 4 limelight treatments!

meet our skincare power players!

Our skin isn’t always the easiest organ to maintain. Sometimes the ingredients found in run of the mill skincare products don’t deliver adequate results. Ever wonder which ingredients on the package actually do all the work? Why are they so important? Below are a list of the major players in the skincare game. Each of these ingredients pack a super-powered punch, and you’ll frequently find them at the top of the ingredient list of your favorite quality products.

1. Retinol – Increases cell turnover on the surface of the skin and reverses the signs of photo aging.
2.Agireline – Relaxes fine lines, prevents the onset of new wrinkles and helps reduce the depth of already formed wrinkles.
3.Co-Enzyme Q10 – Easily penetrates skin to facilitate cellular repair and significantly reduces free radical damage.
4.Sea Buckthorn Berry – Protects the skin membrane and with heavy helpings of Vitamin A and E, slows down skin aging.
5.Zinc Oxide – provides wound healing properties, works an astringent, and controls inflammation as well as helps with acne flare ups.
6.Palmitoyl Tri-Peptide 5- Helps stimulate collagen, firms up the skin, and helps fend off the enzymes that cause skin aging.
7.Borage Seed Oil- Aids in skin cell restoration and repairs tissue damage, this oil especially effective on extremely dry or mature skin.
8.Caffeine – Regulates sebaceous gland secretions, and helps constrict capillaries as well as reduce visible redness.
9.Niacinamide – Another sebaceous gland regulator with anti-inflammatory properties that can also help treat hyperpigmentation.
10. Resveratrol – Anti-oxidant found in Red wine has anti-aging properties and is a natural scavenger of free-radicals.

You may have noticed the frequent mention of the word “cell” in the definitions above. That’s because as we age, cell turnover and renewal slow down significantly. This means less oxygen is delivered to the cells so they don’t repair as quickly and therefore take longer to reach the surface. When that happens, dull skin lingers on the surface with a noticeably rough texture. In order to keep skin looking healthy and your complexion clear these cells need to constantly be replenishing themselves. So by employing the power of ingredients like Retinol and Co Enzyme Q-10 you’re giving your skin the best possible foundation to begin renewing itself as it starts aging.
In addition to proper cell repair, our skin needs to be balanced in terms of oil production to avoid breakouts, as well as tone down and sooth irritation. There is currently no known cure for conditions like Rosacea, which is chronic flushing of the face especially around the nose and cheeks. But, power ingredients like Caffeine and Niacinamide are two great examples of what to look for in products claiming to “control” or help reduce redness and inflammation. By investing in products that have ingredients like those listed above, you are giving your skin a major boost and helping it rejuvenate and repair itself.

To learn more about these ingredients and get one on one advice from our therapists on what your skin needs stop by or book a consultation!

Undetectable Alternatives to Cosmetic Surgery

Did She or Didn’t She?

Have you ever noticed how some women just look incredibly well maintained despite their advanced age? Women like Diane Lane, and Cate Blanchett spring to mind with their taut skin and youthful glow. Sure genetics plays a huge part, but surely they are doing something to help it along? Imagine getting life-changing results from a procedure that mimics the results of invasive surgery but doesn’t require a scalpel and leaves you anesthesia-free. No nasty scars as evidence of the work you had done, and the best part? You won’t have to spend weeks in recovery!
So many people choose to go under the knife thinking that surgery is the only cosmetic solution available to them. In fact, there are new treatments available that give results comparable to surgery, with little or none of the down-time.

Tummy Tuck
The procedure may be popular with certain celebs, but recovery from this invasive surgery will not leave you feeling like a star. Rather than cutting into the body, The Tripollar system works with your body to melt fat layers so that the reduction happens internally without any surgical intervention. Localized heating immediately shrinks the fat cells , contracts collagen fibers and increases the metabolism of the fibroblasts. Translation? The skin tightens, creating a smoother, healthier and younger looking skin.

Botox or Facelift

Instead of injecting a needle smack into your forehead opt for a topical solution. Botinol treatments are formulated with Retin-A and peptides that relax lines in the face, and overtime smooths them out. After treatment skin appears visibly younger and lines are reduced without paralyzing your face. Combined with the proper home care products you will receive long-term results, which can give more lift and firmness to the skin naturally.

Lip Injections

Rosie Huntington Whitely & Angelina Jolie are always flashing plump, smooth lips that incite envy from even the most secure of women. Restylane- a type of injectable filler is often used for lip injections. While injecting your lips with fillers isn’t the most extreme of treatments, accidents do happen. And as with any injection procedure, there are side effects: bruising, swelling and prolonged numbness are just a few parting gifts you may receive from a single injection.Clinical grade lip plumper products that contain collagen and hyalauronic acid, visibly re-plump the lip and smooth without any stinging or adverse effects.

For safe, effective alternatives to cosmetic surgery stop by Dermis Advanced Skincare. Our clinic is located on 116 Albert st, Suite 110 downtown Ottawa. To book appointments call (613) 233 7546 or stop in, and speak with one of our therapists!
